This biography of the brilliant author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina “should become the first resort for everyone drawn to its titanic subject” (Booklist, starred review).   In November 1910, Count Lev Tolstoy died at a remote Russian railway station. At the time of his death, he was the most famous man in Russia, more revered than the tsar, with a growing international following. Born into an aristocratic family, Tolstoy spent his existence rebelling against not only conventional ideas about literature and art but also traditional education, family life, organized religion, and the state.   In “an epic biography that does justice to an epic figure,” Rosamund Bartlett draws extensively on key Russian sources, including fascinating material that has only become available since the collapse of the Soviet Union (Library Journal, starred review). She sheds light on Tolstoy’s remarkable journey from callow youth to writer to prophet; discusses his troubled relationship with his wife, Sonya; and vividly evokes the Russian landscapes Tolstoy so loved and the turbulent times in which he lived.

At this time of writing, The Audiobook Tolstoy: A Russian Life has garnered 10 customer reviews with rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Not a bad score at all as if you round it off, it’s actually a perfect TEN already. From the looks of that rating, we can say the Audiobook is Good TO READ!

A disappointing book, in part because of some of the glowing reviews it received in the press, which seem to this reader to have been over-stated. The author clearly does not like Tolstoy--whatever she says in the interview posted on the Amazon page. I found that she takes every opportunity to tear him down as a person, and as a thinker (although not as an artist). Her ill-will comes through repeatedly in her choice of words. So, for example, when discussing Tolstoy's family she writes, "[t]hroughout his writing career, Tolstoy pillaged his family history for creative material...." Why does she use the word "pillaged" rather than, say, "used" or "relied upon," or even "mined"? The footnoting is eccentric, so that too often she states as facts things that are not backed up with footnotes, so that the reader cannot judge whether she is right or wrong. On the positive side, she offers some really interesting insights into Tolstoy's artistic genius, the creation of his works, and offers some fascinating comparisons--such as between Wagner (whose work Tolstoy despised) and Tolstoy. Unfortunately it remains the case for the reader interested in Tolstoy's life that it is still necessary to read many biographies of the great writer and thinker in order to get a balanced portrait. While this book does have its strengths, for this reader it lacked balance.
