A PULITZER PRIZE FINALISTA Publishers Weekly Best Book of the YearNational Book Award-winning biographer Deirdre Bair explores her fifteen remarkable years in Paris with Samuel Beckett and Simone de Beauvoir, painting intimate new portraits of two literary giants and revealing secrets of the biographical art.In 1971 Deirdre Bair was a journalist and recently minted Ph.D. who managed to secure access to Nobel Prize-winning author Samuel Beckett. He agreed that she could be his biographer despite her never having written—or even read—a biography before. The next seven years comprised of intimate conversations, intercontinental research, and peculiar cat-and-mouse games. Battling an elusive Beckett and a string of jealous, misogynistic male writers, Bair persevered. She wrote Samuel Beckett: A Biography, which went on to win the National Book Award and propel Deirdre to her next subject: Simone de Beauvoir. The catch? De Beauvoir and Beckett despised each other—and lived essentially on the same street. Bair learned that what works in terms of process for one biography rarely applies to the next. Her seven-year relationship with the domineering and difficult de Beauvoir required a radical change in approach, yielding another groundbreaking literary profile and influencing Bair’s own feminist beliefs.     Parisian Lives draws on Bair’s extensive notes from the period, including never-before-told anecdotes. This gripping memoir is full of personality and warmth and gives us an entirely new window on the all-too-human side of these legendary thinkers.

At this time of writing, The Mobi Parisian Lives: Samuel Beckett, Simone de Beauvoir, and Me: A Memoir has garnered 10 customer reviews with rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Not a bad score at all as if you round it off, it’s actually a perfect TEN already. From the looks of that rating, we can say the Mobi is Good TO READ!

I’m surprised that no one has yet reviewed this book. Deidre Bair is the author of several excellent, influential biographies, including her biographies of Beckett and de Beauvoir. “Parisian Lives” describes, not merely her struggle to write these texts, but also the struggle of women academics in the 1970s and 1980s to win recognition in a world dominated by white men, while balancing work and family. The reader gains insights into the complex personalities of both Beckett and de Beauvoir, but also about the process of writing the biography of a living person, with friends, enemies, jealousies, and love both assisting and impeding the biographer in her efforts.Writing is a struggle; writing about literary celebrities, and particularly, in the case of de Beauvoir, a cultural icon, is a constant effort to sort fact from fantasy, negotiate among rival factions and keep the subject of the biography committed to a project that may reveal his or her secrets. Bair describes her struggle to maintain a good relationship with the elusive (paranoid, in my view) Beckett and deepening relationship with de Beauvoir. At the same time, she copes with Becketts’ friends and a barrage of jealous, male academic rivals - the “Becketeers,” as she calls them. That, and raising two children at a time when women were expected to “do everything,” but couldn’t “have everything,” make this book both a clear-eyed, engaging account of biography writing and, to this 1970s-80s academic, a rueful look back at the snarky, contentious, often insane world of academics (particularly so for women).Full disclosure: I, too, earned a Ph.D. in English at Columbia, although I began M.A. shortly after Dr. Bair had completed her Ph.D. As an M.A. student, I took one of Jack Unterecker’s seminars and I agree - he was wonderful. If you are interested in biography, Beckett, de Beauvoir or the history of feminism - particularly in academics - you should read this book.
